Labor and delivery nurse and clinical nurse specialist Kathleen Rice Simpson leads the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) science team on nurse staffing and its focus on missed nursing care (care that is delayed, incomplete, or omitted) during labor and birth. She will discuss her work, and how compromised care influences patient expectations, safety, and the potential for failure to rescue (death after a treatable complication). Simpson will also discuss her research on the effects of electronic alarm fatigue in clinical, perinatal settings and maternity care bundles—sets of evidence-based practices and interventions that improve patient outcomes.

A perinatal clinical nurse specialist for more than 20 years, Kathleen Rice Simpson, Ph.D., RNC, CNS-BC, FAAN, has conducted research and written peer-reviewed journal articles and textbook chapters on topics including fetal well-being during labor and labor induction, as well as on subjects such as interdisciplinary communication and nurse staffing. She is editor in chief of MCN: The American Journal of Maternal Child Nursing, editor of AWHONN’s Perinatal Nursing (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2013), and chair of the March of Dimes National Advisory Committee.
