Community-based research engages individuals and institutions in local communities during every phase of research. A researcher who knows a community firsthand can lead from within—gathering information, establishing priorities, and taking actions that reflect and respond to its particular concerns. Bilingual and bicultural nurse researcher Antonia M. Villarruel, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, will talk about her experience, leadership, and demonstrable success using this approach.

A professor and the Margaret Bond Simon Dean of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, Villarruel is widely recognized for her leadership in policy, practice, and research.

Villarruel’s research is focused on health promotion, health disparities, and community participation. She received the President's Award for Health Behavior Intervention Research from the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research; the Edge Runner Award from the American Academy of Nursing; and the Trailblazer Award from the National Black Nurses Association, among many other accolades and honors.

Lecture attendees receive 1.5 contact hours for nursing continuing education. These may be used for RN license renewal in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and in other states where they are accepted.
