“One is not the same after this course.” That is how a first-year student described the experience of taking one of the pilot courses Boston College offered for the first time last fall as part of our ongoing renewal of the University’s core curriculum. Endeavor explores the liberal arts advantage

On January 14 and 15, nearly 200 sophomores and 60 alumni took part in Endeavor, the inaugural career exploration program for second-year students pursuing liberal arts degrees. The two-day session included informational workshops, panels, and networking sessions on campus as well as onsite visits to alumni workplaces such as Children’s Hospital, Cambridge Associates, and Citizens Bank. Chiles invited to join Global Commission board

The Global Commission on Pollution, Health and Development has named DeLuca Professor of Biology and Vice Provost for Research Thomas Chiles, who has focused on cancer reserch, to its board of influential leaders, researchers, and practitioners in the fields of pollution management, environmental health, and sustainable development. Backed by the British journal The Lancet and organizations including the U.N. and World Bank, the commission is charged with identifying health and economic costs of pollution and advancing solutions for policy makers. Experiencing the Dublin Rising

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny led the January 12 ceremonial launch of “Dublin Rising 1916-2016,” a virtual tour that lets users visit locations in and around Dublin and explore the events of the 1916 Easter Rising. Google built the site in partnership with Ireland 2016 and Century Ireland, with the cooperation of Irish universities and cultural organizations including Boston College. What’s fair?

Children’s sense of fairness varies from culture to culture, according to a pioneering study coauthored by Assistant Professor of Psychology Katherine McAuliffe and published in Nature. A team of psychologists, anthropologists, and evolutionary biologists studied 866 pairs of children in seven different societies to see how they reacted to finding themselves at an unjust disadvantage or unfair advantage.
