Message from Interim Dean Gregory Kalscheur, S.J.
Greetings from Gasson Hall! I’m delighted to welcome you to this inaugural issue of Arts and Sciences. My initial duties this summer as Interim Dean included sharing with the parents of incoming A&S freshmen my thoughts on the educational vision that animates the College of Arts and Sciences. Spreading the gift of life

Economics professors Tayfun Sönmez and M. Ütku Unver have applied principles of game theory and market design to create a kidney exchange program that boosts the success rate in connecting organ-compatible donors and recipients. View a video about the program »

 

Goizueta Curates McMullen’s Lam Exhibition

Highlighted in the “New Season” section of the New York Times, “Wifredo Lam: Imagining New Worlds,” a group of some 40 paintings with drawings, etchings, and lithographs by the 20th-century Cuban artist, will be on display at the McMullen Museum until December 14, 2014. New major in environmental studies

Fifteen students are majoring in environmental studies, the University’s new interdisciplinary major whose goals include providing an understanding of the scientific, political, and cultural aspects of the world’s environmental challenges. Faculty from 10 departments in the Arts and Sciences as well as from the schools of education, management, nursing, and law contribute to the 90-course curriculum. Undergraduates Take Part in University Research

This past summer, 171 rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors were engaged in studies conducted in 16 departments in the College of Arts and Sciences on research topics ranging from artificial photosynthesis to gender differences in rodents to art on the periphery of the Roman Empire. Of Note
The Italian energy firm Eni Sp.A. conferred its prestigious Eni Award for New Frontiers in Hydrocarbons on Amir Hoveyda, professor of chemistry. The $270,000 award recognizes Hoveyda’s work in developing catalysts that can synthesize complex molecules used in pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, and agrochemicals. Tina Packer, the celebrated stage director, actress, and founding artistic director of Shakespeare and Co. in Lenox, Mass., is the 2014–15 Monan Professor in Theater Arts. Packer will direct a student stage production, teach an advanced acting class, and lead performance and interpretation workshops during her two-semester campus residency. The National Science Foundation awarded the Mathematics Department and the Lynch School of Education $1.6 million to train, support, and help retain math teachers in Massachusetts public schools. Read an article about the grant »

Distinguished legal scholar and theologian Cathleen Kaveny has joined the faculties of the College of Arts & Sciences and Boston College Law School as the Darald and Juliet Libby Professor. Kaveny is the first person to hold simultaneous faculty appointments in two Boston College schools. Read more about the appointment »

The English Department’s Associate Professor of the Practice Joseph Nugent and students in his James Joyce seminar have created Digital Dubliners, a richly annotated e-book of Joyce’s famous short story collection. Boston College biology major Matthew Evans ’15 has won the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, considered the premier undergraduate award in the fields of science, mathematics, and engineering. Evans’s research has focused on the neurobiology of cell growth. Read more about Evans »
