Dear Boston College Parents:

This edition of Parent Update is dedicated to transitions—helping you help your student make a smooth passage to the coming year.

This fall marks a significant transition for me as well. After spending more than 40 years in student affairs—the last five at Boston College—I have decided, after much reflection, to retire.

I am grateful that Joy Haywood Moore, associate vice president of Alumni Relations and University Commencement director, has agreed to serve as interim vice president of Student Affairs. A 1981 Lynch School graduate who received an honorary degree from Boston College in 2010, Moore has held a variety of senior leadership positions in higher education and independent schools. In 2011, she returned to her alma mater from the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy in South Africa.

As always, I wish you and your student continued success in this academic year.

Designing Your Life: A Personal Journey for First-Year Students »

On September 6, Boston College welcomes Dave Evans, co-author of Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life, to the University’s First Year Academic Convocation. Evans will deliver the keynote and engage members of the first-year class in conversation about his book, which was chosen as this year’s “common text” with the hope it would provide new students with insight into how to respond to life’s questions and seek direction as they move through their personal journeys. The book may appeal to parents as well.

Whether you’re dropping off your student on campus for the first or fourth time, move-in day can be a challenging time. Here are some tips to help manage the transition.

Getting involved »

Interested in helping your son or daughter acclimate to college life? Encourage your student to get involved. The BC campus is home to more than 270 student organizations, dedicated to interests that range from arts and culture to politics and social justice to club sports. And it’s never too late to join. The Student Involvement Fair kicks off on Aug. 31.

Boosting diversity »

BC has partnered with DiversityEdu to offer an online diversity learning module to all undergraduates. The tool, launched this summer, teaches students to recognize unconscious biases and stereotypical thinking.
