I am writing to you from Shanghai, where I have just attended the first Global Education Deans Forum, a group of about 35 Deans working together to share best practices and advocate for improved education around the world. Honored for lifetime achievement from the American Psychological Association

Augustus Long Professor Janet Helms, director of the Boston College Institute for the Study and Promotion of Race and Culture, received lifetime achievement awards from the American Psychological Association for outstanding contributions in the promotion of ethnic minority issues and for mentoring. Learn about these prominent awards »

Exploring new graduate schools of education [Video]

New master’s degree programs in teaching that are unaffiliated with colleges or universities emphasize learning from practice. The new graduate schools of education (nGSEs) have been applauded in some circles and criticized in others. Cawthorne Professor Marilyn Cochran-Smith and her research team are the first to try to systematically examine how teachers are prepared in nGSEs. View video and learn more »

Launching two new online master’s degree programs

Starting in January 2019, the Lynch School will offer two new online master of education programs: one is an online curriculum and instruction program and the other educational leadership and policy. Three new faculty arrive at Lynch

The Lynch School welcomes three new assistant professors this year: Betty Lai, a clinical psychologist studying the effects of stressors on childhood health and education; Emily Gates, a scholar and practitioner of evaluation; and Raquel Muñiz, who researches trauma-informed teaching and equity in education. Faculty news

Professor David Blustein received the National Career Development Association’s highest honor, the Eminent Career Award, for outstanding service to career development through contributions to theory, practice, leadership, and scholarship.

Catherine Wong, director of Urban Outreach Initiatives, and five Donovan Scholars were featured on WCVB-TV CityLine. Focused on diversity in Boston Public Schools, the show highlighted the Donovan program’s work to recruit, retain, and support educators of color.

Alumni notes

Liz McCartney ’94 (Elementary Education), co-founder and chief operating officer of the St. Bernard Project, was selected to be one of the “300 for 300” people and moments to mark New Orleans’s tricentennial. Her non-profit—SBP—is a leader in disaster resilience and recovery.

Mandy Savitz-Romer, Ph.D. ’04 (Higher Education) co-authored Technology and Engagement: Making Technology Work for First Generation College Students (Rutgers University Press, 2018) with Associate Dean Ana M. Martinez Alemán and Associate Professor Heather Rowan-Kenyon.
