Boston College
September 7, 2017
Dear Graduate Student:
We write to remind you that an election to determine whether certain graduate students will be represented by the United Auto Workers union is scheduled to be held next week on Tuesday, September 12th and Wednesday, September 13th.
Specifically, graduate students working as research assistants, teaching fellows, teaching assistants, and graduate assistants as of the May 12, 2017 payroll (please see the National Labor Relations Board “Notice of Election” for the NLRB’s official description of “eligible voters” – link attached here) at the Carroll School of Management, the Connell School of Nursing, the Lynch School of Education, the Graduate School of the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences (excluding the Theology Department), and the School of Social Work should vote at the following voter location:
McElroy Commons on the Chestnut Hill Campus.
Voting Hours: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 – 6:00 p.m. on both dates.
Graduate students working in covered positions at the Boston College Law School as of the May 12, 2017 payroll should vote at the following voter location:
Stuart House on the Newton Campus.
Voting Hours: 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on both dates.
The election will be by secret ballot under the supervision of the Regional Director of the NLRB and the outcome will be determined by a majority of those who vote, not by a majority of the proposed bargaining unit. This means that a small turnout, while not representative of broad student sentiment, will still affect not only current graduate students but also graduate students who choose to study at Boston College in the future. It is therefore crucial that all eligible voters take the time to carefully consider what representation by the United Auto Workers means for themselves, Boston College, and our academic mission and that each eligible voter cast a ballot. In order to research the many questions you may have about this election or better understand Boston College’s position on graduate student unionization go to http://www.bc.edu/nlrbruling.
The election on September 12th and 13th could set our course for the foreseeable future and no matter what your position is, it is critical that you come to campus on either day to cast your vote.

Best,

David Trainor
Vice President for Human Resources
