Boston College School of Nursing

Dear Connell School community,

Seventy years ago, the Boston College School of Nursing opened its doors to a class of 35 students. Celebrating this milestone earlier this year gave me the opportunity to pause and consider how we prepare our nurses. Since 1947, Boston College has educated skilled, compassionate, well-prepared critical thinkers who consistently provide outstanding patient care. BC nurses are leaders—professionals and practitioners who are indispensible to the changing field of health care.

This Year in Review showcases outstanding achievements of students, faculty, and alumni during the 2016–17 academic year. It recaps the celebration of the School of Nursing’s founding in January and, last June, the 50th anniversary of the Roy Adaptation Model, developed by Professor and Nurse Theorist Sr. Callista Roy. It reports on the arrival of new faculty members and accolades awarded to long-time Professors Ann Wolbert Burgess, who was named a Living Legend by the American Academy of Nursing, and Dorothy Jones, recently designated a Living Legend in Massachusetts Nursing.

Our faculty researchers are doing exciting work with clinical partners in Boston (including the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital) and across the country. Meanwhile, the school is expanding nursing-specific international opportunities for students and faculty.

I am both pleased and honored to share with you this annual roundup of notable news from the past academic year as I look forward to an exciting year to come.

Sincerely,
