Toward renewal

Audio only

On September 18, 2003, in Conte Forum, Boston College’s Church in the 21st Century initiative formally began its second year with an event titled, “Toward Renewal: What Have We Learned? Where Are We Going?” University President William P. Leahy, SJ, opened the evening by reflecting on the past year’s programs. Then a panel of six speakers took the floor: Patrick B. Downes ’05; Fr. J. Bryan Hehir, president of Catholic Charities USA; Mary Johnson, SND, an associate professor at Emmanuel College; Catalina Montes, principal of Thomas Gardner Elementary School; Elizabeth M. Paulhus ’04; and Peter Steinfels, religion correspondent for the New York Times.

Moderated by Tim Russert of NBC News and Meet the Press, the discussion covered the state of the Catholic Church today, what has been learned in the aftermath of the sexual abuse crisis, and what challenges still lie ahead.
