Clean break

Frank Locascio, assistant director of fitness and facility operations, Flynn Recreation Complex:

“On one full day during winter break, 12 students and 6 full-time staff members clean the equipment at the RecPlex. We lift up all the exercise equipment and clean underneath; vacuum and scrub everything in the fitness center with a hot solution; and collapse and clean the basketball hoops. We installed carpet in the lobby and painted ceilings in the locker rooms, which has to happen on a regular basis because of the humidity. We manually scrubbed the bottom of the pool and “shocked,” or super-chlorinated, the water. Afterwards, it takes at least three days to restore the pH to a safe level for swimmers. Extended closure time is our only opportunity to get big projects done.”
