Kevin Greene ’79 with John Howard, SJ, professor in the A&S Honors Program
John Howard, SJ
KEVIN GREENE: Fr. Howard’s lessons:
• Read, read, read, and give yourself over completely to your topic of study. (He assigned us hundreds of pages a week to make this easier to do.)
• Read the text first, formulate your own opinion, then read the scholars’ criticisms.
• The purpose of a Jesuit education is not to teach you what to think but how to think.
• Never walk away from a debate. Defend your views and do not let emotion get the better of you.
• Jack Howard taught us to be lovers and seekers of nous—a Greek word that means so much more than “knowledge.” Twenty-nine years later, the lamp is still lit.
Kevin Greene is an executive with a commercial real estate firm based in Southern California.
