At least one-third of the 1,400 copies of the Istoria printed in 1613 contained reprints of the scientific tracts by Scheiner to which Welser had asked Galileo to respond. (The remaining copies of the first-edition printing, meant for export from Italy, did not contain Scheiner’s work, due to copyright law.) The volume at Boston College is one of the former group. It includes this fold-out illustration, drawn by Scheiner based on his own sunspot observations and labeled in Latin.
