This page, in prologue to Galileo’s Third Letter on Sunspots, is an epistle from Welser to Galileo: “I send to your Excellency some new speculations by my friend [Scheiner] which I have agreed to publish.” The footnotes which appear in the right margin throughout the book are brief summaries of each page’s full text, an aid to skimming or quick location of a passage.
