The title page bears the image of a lynx, symbol of acute perception, and a play on the name of the keen-sighted Lynceus of Greek mythology. The coat of arms, circled by laurel branches, indicates Galileo’s membership in the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, Europe’s first scientific academy, still in existence today. The crown at top was the trademark of Roman aristocrat Federico Cesi, who founded the academy in 1603 and published Galileo’s work under its auspices. The page also bears the name of Cosimo II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany and a patron of Galileo.
