Hippocrates (c. 460–c. 377 b.c.), pictured here examining a human form, is known as “the Father of Medicine.” The Greek physician is the namesake (though not the originator) of the oath of professional ethics traditionally administered to graduating medical students. Versions of the oath vary, but its main principles include respect for the privacy of the patient, the use of one’s medical abilities to help rather than harm, and leading an honorable life.
