Georges Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte took shape on the surface of O’Neill Plaza over the course of Friday and Saturday. Under the direction of fine arts professor Sheila Gallagher, a detail from the painting (chosen to compliment this year’s “umbrella” theme) was divided into a 96-square grid. Festival-goers were invited to add a segment with pastels; the image was completed after roughly 10 hours of collaboration. Though preserved temporarily with hairspray and fixative, it soon washed away in the spring rain.
