A unifying, collaborative sculpture project has become a festival tradition. The 2004 theme was “Umbrellas in the Midst: From Geometry to Abstraction,” a nod to the fickle April weather (which, this year, obliged with three days of sunshine). Seventeen campus groups received a basic sculptural structure—a large patio umbrella with a unique canvas-and-wood base designed by fine arts professor Mark Cooper—and had free license to decorate and complete the sculpture in any way they chose. Pictured at left is the result of handiwork by the Italian Home for Children, a PULSE program placement.
