Jessica Langella

At the inaugural freshman Student Academic Convocation on September 14, freshman Jessica Langella, representing Duchesne 3 East, stands in front of Gasson Hall and holds the torch that has just been lit by William B. Neenan, SJ, special assistant to the president, and Joseph A. Appleyard, SJ, vice president for University Mission and Ministry. The Duchesne students, along with other freshmen, then processed to Conte Forum where they attended a talk by Paul Farmer, MD, whose medical work in Haiti is chronicled in Tracy Kidder’s Mountains Beyond Mountains. All freshmen received a copy of the book at orientation and heard talks from Farmer, Kidder, and University President William P. Leahy, SJ, in Conte Forum. The theme of the convocation was “Go set the world aflame,” the parting words of St. Ignatius of Loyola to Francis Xavier as he left to bring the Gospel to Asia.
