Alan Wolfe talks with Boston College Magazine editor Ben Birnbaum about his book Return to Greatness: How America Lost Its Sense of Purpose and What It Needs to Do to Recover It (Princeton University Press, 2005), in which he critiques conservatives and liberals for opting for small-mindedness over greatness and offers Alexander Hamilton, John Marshall, Abraham Lincoln, and others as examples of American leaders who built national strength and direction. Wolfe is professor of political science and director of the Boisi Center for Religion and American Public Life at Boston College. He is the author or editor of 16 books, a contributing editor to the New Republic, and a writer for the New York Times, Harper’s, and the Atlantic Monthly.
