Comics on the Heights

On November 18, 2004, 125 students gathered in Higgins 300 for the final night of the Funniest Comic on the Heights event, cosponsored by the College Republicans of Boston College and UGBC. Among those in attendance were Ashley Mattys ’07 (left) and Kaitlyn Sprague ’07. This was the inaugural year of the event, and organizers received 37 applications from student comics, who were narrowed down to 15 contestants. Modeled on the television show Last Comic Standing where the winner was given a one-year NBC talent contract, the competition took place during three nights in November. Students paid $5 to watch the comic routines, and then voted for their favorite performers each night. The winner was Sean Mitchell ’07, who received a “24-hour talent contract” that gave him exposure in BC media outlets for a day, and a $50 gift certificate to Best Buy. In one of his jokes quoted in the Heights, Mitchell poked fun at his freckles as he pretended to be God and said, “Jesus, come over here. This is hilarious. Check out where I put the freckle on this kid.”
