Jacqueline Grant ’08 is congratulated by President William P. Leahy, SJ, on February 13 shortly after she was named winner of the 2007 Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Scholarship at a dinner in Lyons Hall. A biology major from Mill Valley, California, Grant is a member of the Student Judicial Board, a residential assistant, and co-director of FACES at BC, a student organization that promotes informal discussions about diversity and interracial relations on campus. She is also a Teach for America campaign manager, and a fundraiser for schools damaged by Hurricane Katrina. “I hope I have inspired students of all racial backgrounds to follow their passions and stand up for civil rights,” she said in accepting the award.

The annual dinner, which marked the 25th anniversary of the scholarship program, was attended by 150 guests, including Grant’s parents Robert Lee Grant and Liesbeth Matthieu, and Trustee Darcel D. Clark ’83, a New York Supreme Court justice and the scholarship’s first recipient in 1982. Stephen Pemberton ’89, chief diversity officer of Monster.com, was the dinner speaker.

The Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Scholarship is awarded “to a junior who exemplifies the ideals of Dr. King through academic excellence and community service.”
