Selections from December 2, 2005 “Christmas Concert” of the Chorale and Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of John Finney, and from the December 9, 2005, first-ever combined performance of the Symphonic Band, conducted by David Healey ’90, and the Wind Ensemble, conducted by Sebastian Bonaiuto. Both performances took place at Trinity Chapel on the Newton Campus.
Founded in 1913 as an all-male glee club, the chorale is one of the University’s oldest performing groups. It includes 170 students, faculty, and staff. Finney, dubbed “one of the city’s busiest and most valuable musicians,” by Richard Dyer of the Boston Globe, became its director 1993 and was appointed conductor of the orchestra in 1999. He is also associate conductor and chorus master of Boston’s Handel & Haydn Society.
The Symphonic Band performs traditional wind band music as well as large-scale orchestral transcriptions. Healey holds a master’s degree in music from the New England Conservatory and was director of bands and assistant professor of music at Chicago’s Saint Xavier University before returning to BC in1999.
The 50-member Wind Ensemble, which gave its first concert in October of 2005, was founded by Bonaiuto, who is the principal administrator of the University’s Bands Program, encompassing the Symphonic Band, the University Wind Ensemble, the award winning BC bOp! Jazz Ensemble, the Screaming Eagles Marching Band, and the newly created Maroon and Gold Pep Bands
