The 19th annual Breaking the Barriers Ball drew some 250 celebrants to Gasson Hall on December 1 for an evening of music, food and drink, and mingling among faculty, parents, and students, including (from left) Alexander Arnow ’09; Nicholas Dominello ’09; Dwayne Carpenter, codirector of the Jewish Studies Program and professor of Spanish and Hispanic studies; John J. Burns, associate academic vice president for undergraduate programs; and Laura Tallent ’09. Founded in 1986, this year’s ball raised $1,500 for the Carol DiMaiti Stuart Foundation, which provides scholarships for students from the Mission Hill neighborhood in an effort to improve race relations in the city of Boston. The University’s jazz ensemble BC bOp! played two sets, and several a capella groups performed in the rotunda.
