On November 1, 2005, Cutberto Garza succeeded Jack Neuhauser as academic vice president at Boston College. In this interview conducted for Boston College Magazine, Garza talks about his interests in research, public service, and teaching, his families’ deep roots in Mexico and Texas, and his affinity for an educational mission that, “links serious scholarship with improving the human condition.”

The former vice-provost, and longtime director of the Division of Nutritional Sciences, at Cornell University, Garza has also served as director of the Food and Nutrition Program of the United Nations University, associate director of the USDA Children’s Nutrition Research Center at the Baylor College of Medicine, and chair of a multi-country study on infant and young child growth, sponsored by the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and other organizations, which will be published in 2006.
