On November 11, 2014, some 40 years after the U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam, four Boston College alumni met before an audience in Gasson 100 to talk about the experience of combat in Southeast Asia and the lasting effects of that time: Paul Daley ’63, a retired lawyer who flew 212 combat missions as a naval officer; James Huse Jr. ’65, former inspector general for the Social Security Administration whose Army tours of duty were as an infantry officer and special intelligence officer; Paul McNellis, SJ, Ph.D.’93, a member of the Boston College philosophy department who was an Army infantry officer advising South Vietnamese military units; and Larry Rawson ’63, a commentator for ESPN who served as a Marine intelligence officer and artillery forward observer. Their discussion was moderated by Seth Jacobs, history professor at Boston College and the author of Cold War Mandarin: Ngo Dinh Diem and the Origins of America’s War in Vietnam, 1950–1963 (2006).
