At the University’s eighth annual Arts Festival this spring, the Arts Council’s alumni award for distinguished achievement was presented to Saturday Night Live cast member Amy Poehler ’93. The night before she accepted the award, theater department faculty member Luke Jorgensen interviewed Poehler in front of a capacity crowd in Devlin Hall 008 as part of the “Inside the BC Studio” series. In this video, she talks about what she learned from performing as an undergraduate with My Mother’s Fleabag, America’s oldest collegiate improvisational comedy troupe; the process of putting together SNL each week; her advice for students who want to get started in the entertainment industry; and her upcoming animated show for Nickelodeon, Super Scout.
A native of Burlington, Massachusetts, Poehler cofounded the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, in Chicago. The improv group produced a sketch show on Comedy Central for three seasons and opened a theater in New York that continues to present shows and hold classes for aspiring actors. She joined the cast of SNL in 2002 and has performed on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, in Mean Girls, and in Arrested Development (alongside her husband, Will Arnett, who was also in attendance at the BC Arts Festival). She will appear in the forthcoming films Blades of Glory and On Broadway. While visiting Boston College, Poehler performed two sold-out shows with current members of My Mother’s Fleabag, under the Arts Festival tent on O’Neill Plaza.
