On March 1, University President William P. Leahy, SJ, announced the promotion of 29 Boston College faculty members, 15 of whom became newly-tenured associate professors, joining Boston College’s cadre of permanent faculty.
For most faculty, promotion to tenure, if it comes at all, comes after five years of probationary employment during which teaching, research, and service are measured, with promotion then voted on by senior faculty in departments and then by an elected committee of faculty that makes its recommendations to the president. “It is a grueling process,” noted Patricia DeLeeuw, associate academic vice president, setting some academic careers in motion, and derailing others.
@BC recently interviewed 14 of the faculty members who were awarded tenure this year to learn how they intend to use their new freedoms, including, in most cases, a sabbatical semester next fall.
