Bob, as many of us called him in Sharon, was an advocate for justice. When he faced a crossroad, he said to his parishioners: “What would Jesus do?” That was why he was so clear about justice and never fearful of speaking aloud about injustices from the pulpit. I was a member of his parish for twenty years and he was my friend. It is not often that one, who is a Black Catholic coming from Harlem having been raised in the faith from childhood, comes across someone who is so grounded in faith that his sermons gave such meaning to real world issues of racism, antisemitism, gender bias, and homophobia. I was in awe of him because he was a Roman Catholic priest who was an activist. In my more than half-a-century of Catholicism, the only other priest for whom I held this deep respect was Father Drinan. On Martin Luther King Day some years ago, Bob asked me to give the sermon and I accepted. He then told me I was the first woman to ever give a sermon at our church and for that honor, I will be extremely grateful. I can only hope that the Church and its priests will keep Fr. Bob and Fr. Drinan’s causes and activism alive.
