Appalachian spring

Six hundred and thirty–one undergraduate students are traveling to impoverished communities with the Appalachia Volunteers of Boston College program during Spring Break. The program, run by the Office of Campus Ministry, has placed volunteers at 36 sites in 10 states, selected in partnership with Habitat for Humanity, the Southeast Rural Community Assistance Project, and other organizations. Depending on the site, students are constructing housing, making improvements to schools and public buildings, or preparing paperwork on behalf of residents seeking government relief. The Appalachia program began in 1978 with a dozen student volunteers.

In addition to those participating in the Appalachia Volunteers program, some 100 undergraduates are spending their spring break on service trips overseas through the Pedro Arrupe International Solidarity Program, the Lynch School of Education Jamaica service trip, and the Carroll School of Management’s program in Bolivia.
