As the first step in the exterior refurbishment of Gasson Hall that will be complete by 2013—in time for the building’s 100th anniversary (and the University’s 150th)—Kelly Streeter of Vertical Access rappelled down the outside of the tower, taking digital photographs and records of the condition of the stones and mortar on August 2. Her images were transmitted live to portable computers held by other members of the design team who monitored and directed the progress of the stone-by-stone assessment. The University’s Office of Facilities Management is overseeing the assessment, which will also include accelerated-aging tests to determine the long-term stability of the stone.
