Candide

From April 27 to May 1, the Boston College Department of Theater presents Hugh Wheeler’s adaptation of Voltaire’s Candide, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Richard Wilbur, John Latouche, and Stephen Sondheim. Directed by Stuart Hecht, associate professor and chairman of the theater department, the cast includes Lacey Upton as the “Old Woman,” (above) performing the song I Am Easily Assimilated, along with (l-r) Will Nunziata ’06, Zach Korzyk ’06, Anthony Nunziata ’06, and Ian Stoker-Long ’07 as the “Spanish Dons.” Candide, a comic operetta originally adapted for the stage by Lillian Hellman, premiered with Bernstein’s score on Broadway in 1956 and soon won acclaim from the New York Times as his “masterpiece.”

Candide is produced in conjunction with the Boston College 7th Annual Arts Festival, which features dozens of performances, demonstrations, and readings. The Arts Fest runs from April 28 through April 30, with many events held in the main performance tent in O’Neill Plaza
