The Undergraduate Government of Boston College, in collaboration with the student groups Real Food BC and Ecopledge and the University’s Office of Sustainability, sponsored the second annual BCisGreen Week March 11–18, a program of lectures, films, and activities promoting environmentally sound practices at Boston College. Dining Services expanded its offering of locally sourced foods and held a local apple tasting; Bapst and O’Neill libraries displayed books on sustainability and handed out 2GB flash drives to reduce printing. The Office of Sustainability announced the results of its six-week residence hall energy conservation contest (133,793 kilowatt-hours of energy saved in total). And students traded in their incandescent light bulbs for free fluorescents, which produce a six-month payback and a 75 percent reduction in energy use, according to Deirdre Manning, Boston College’s director of sustainability and energy management.
