The University began a five-day “Welcome Weekend” for the 2,350-member Class of 2013 with a September 3 gathering on O’Neill Plaza that featured musical performances, remarks by President William P. Leahy, SJ, and other University officials, and a “pinning ceremony” at which students received an eagle pin inscribed with their class year (alumni representative Alexandra Faklis ’08 welcomed the newcomers to the “BC community—you’ll belong for the rest of your life”). The following four days included a “first year, first night” block party; a screening of Up on the Campus Green; an exhibition reception at the McMullen Museum; and a Boston Harbor cruise. The activities concluded Monday afternoon with a scavenger hunt, designed to familiarize new students with the campus and its traditions, for which all clues and answers were delivered via text messages. (A sample clue: “In the sea of red outside Lyons Hall, you’ll find a stripe of white. How many bricks are missing?” The answer: 28.) Above, President Leahy talked with new students on the Quad following his address to the class, during which he thanked them “for the gifts that you bring” and said that “the goal Boston College has for its students is that you develop your talents and intellectual gifts, but also, while you are here, that you reflect on who you are, what your deep desires are, and that you come to understand in ever more deep ways what God is inviting you to be and to become.”
