Hailing from 64 countries on six continents, this year’s approximately 400 new international students, a near match with last year’s number, arrived on campus in late August for a special introduction to Boston College, presented by the Office of International Students and Scholars. The 62 students from the People’s Republic of China represent the largest contingent. Other well-represented countries include South Korea with 49 students, France with 36, Australia with 21, Canada and India each with 17, and the United Kingdom with 16. On Wednesday, August 26, the undergraduates moved into campus housing. Three days of orientation followed that included a welcome from President William P. Leahy, SJ; tutorials on American academic expectations, visa issues, and student activities; tours of campus facilities; and a harbor cruise. “It looks like the pace of life is going to be different,” said Erik Kim ’13, an incoming Carroll School of Management student from São Paulo, Brazil, seen above (center) at an August 28 session in Devlin Hall. “You have to manage yourself and your time.” The 80 or so undergraduates among the international newcomers also attended the Office of First Year Experience’s final orientation session of the summer, which started August 30. All incoming undergraduates attend one of seven three-day sessions, offered between June and September.
