Remembrance and hope

More than 500 members of the Boston College community attended St. Ignatius Church on January 19 for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Gathering, whose title was supplemented by the words “and Celebration of Hope” in honor of Barack Obama’s inauguration the following day. Clergy and students representing the Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, and Jewish faiths spoke at the celebration, and there were performances by the 100-member Voices of Hope choir and the dance group Females Incorporating Sisterhood Through Step. “The litany was our traditional Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Service,” said Rev. Howard McClendon of Campus Ministry. “With the inauguration taking place the next day, we incorporated additional material expressing our hope for the continuing growth and evolution of American society.”
