Special delivery

This March, Belle Liang of the Lynch School of Education will travel to Uganda to continue work on a project called “Postcards to Africa”—the start, she hopes, of “an ongoing collaboration to establish a global network of youth support for children of war in Africa.” In March 2008 (photo above), Liang delivered postcards to Ugandan children living in displaced person camps on the theme “what does peace mean to you,” created by students attending American and Chinese colleges. “The young African recipients responded in kind, resulting in a collection of 1,000 postcards,” said Liang. A joint project of the Christian relief group World Vision International and Boston College’s GenerationPulse (formed by Liang and her students to build a network of “catalysts for social justice”), Postcards to Africa aims to motivate Ugandan children by expanding their peer group. During her upcoming trip, Liang will work with Ugandan educators to assess the children’s literacy and social development. Her goal is not only to benefit African children, but also to enable Boston College students “to make a difference in the lives of kids a continent away.”
