Note"... Sixteen kingdoms (Shiliuguo 十六國), conventional term for the sixteen states established over most of North China and Sichuan between 304 and 439, of which five were Xianbei 鮮卑, three Han 漢, three Xiongnu 匈奴, two Di 氐, Qiang 羌, Jie 羯, Ba-Di 巴氐. Collectively the non-Han people who ruled the North were known as the "five barbarians" (wuhu 五胡)--Cf. Wilkinson, Chinese History, a manual, p. 10. (This is the reason that the LC subject heading is China--History--Five Hu and the Sixteen Kingdoms).
