Abstract:

As the publishing center of modern China, Shanghai is renowned for its publication of Western books. However, the city’s printing history prior to its opening as a treaty port in 1843 is often overlooked. Because of specific historical circumstances, the dissemination of Western learning in the form of church books is a cultural phenomenon. The Catholic churches in Shanghai began printing Chinese texts as early as the late Ming and early Qing period. This time could be broadly divided into three periods: the Jingyitang church period(around the latter half of the 17th century), the Gongletang church period(around 1824–1853), and the Cimutang church/T’ou-sè-wè period(1850s–1958). This paper focuses on the first two periods. Based on at least 13 texts printed by the Jingyitang church and 10 texts by the Gongletang church in libraries worldwide, this study analyzes their respective historical context and the features of each period. It also discusses other printed and hand-written texts produced by various churches and Catholics in Shanghai during the same period. By exploring the early history of Western book publishing in Shanghai, this paper aims to trace the internal context of dissemination of Western knowledge and beliefs during the late Ming and Qing dynasties.
