The frontispiece bears the emblem of the Society of Jesus in red color. This book is a ritual in Latin specially adapted to the needs of the Japanese church in accordance with the Rituale Romanum and edited by Bishop Luis de Cerqueira.
One special feature of the present volume is the fact that it is the first and, as far as we know, the only two-color printing (black and red) produced by the Jesuit mission press. It is, moreover, by far the earliest two-color printing published in Japan. According to Braga (1963, p. 124) there are known to be eight copies preserved of the present work: (1) Roman Jesuit Archive, (2) British Museum, London, (3) Toyo bunko, Tokyo, (4) Library of Sophia University, Tokyo; (5-7), Pei-t'ang, Peking, three copies and, (8) Public Library ofToulouse, France.

Luis de Cerqueira (1552-1614), was a native of Vila de Alvito, Evora, in Portugal. He joined the Jesuit Order in 1566. After his studies he spent some years in Rome, serving as secretary at the Jesuit Curia. Around 1577 he retumed to Portugal, where he was occupied in various assignments. In 1592 he was named bishop of Japan, but he did not arrive there until 1598. He spent sixteen years in the mission and worked tirelessly for the spreading of the Gospel. He went through great hardship in the persecution ofthe Tokugawa reign and died in Nagasaki.
