耶穌會士在華名錄 1842-1955 = Directory of the Jesuits in China from 1842-1955 / Olivier Lardinois, Fernando Mateos, Edmund Ryden.
Select bibliography: p. 319-321.

“Researchers in the history of Chinese Christianity during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries are familiar with the directory of the Jesuits in China from 1552 to 1800 compiled by Fr. Joseph Dehergne, SJ. The book was published in French in 1973 in the prestigious Bibliotheca Instituti Historici Societatis Jesu. However, until now no similar directory exists for the second great period of the mission of the Jesuits in China that can easily be situated between years 1842 and 1955: 1842 when the three first Jesuit missionaries arrived in China after the restoration of the Society of Jesus, and 1955 when foreign missionaries had already been expelled from mainland China by the communist government, and most of the outstanding native Jesuits were imprisoned.

The publication of the present directory of the Jesuits in China between 1842 and 1955, aims to remedy this omission. It is the result of collaboration between three Jesuits from the Chinese Province of the Society of Jesus: Fernando Mateos (✝), Edmund Ryden and Olivier Lardinois. Beside the biographical notices of 1,570 Jesuits who worked in China between 1842 and 1955, this directory includes various annexes so that it can be more easily consulted and from different points of entry: an index of names in the forms transliteration each used, another index according to international Pinyin and Chinese characters, Jesuit missions statistics, a chronology of the history of the mission and various mission areas, status in Church leadership (Bishops, Prefects Apostolic) and in academic and scientific work, a list of official and non-official Jesuit martyrs, a few maps and photos, and a selective bibliography.”—BACK COVER.

Abstract: Beside the biographical notices of 1,570 Jesuits who worked in China between 1842 and 1955, this directory includes various annexes so that it can be more easily consulted and from different points of entry: an index of names in the forms of transliteration each used, another index according to international Pinyin and Chinese characters, Jesuit missions statistics, a chronology of the history of the mission and various mission areas, status in Church leadership (bishops, prefects apostolic) and in academic and scientific work, a list of official and non-official Jesuit martyrs, a few maps and photos, and a selective bibliography.

Publishers note -- 'Sounds of Footsteps in Empty Valleys' (konggu zuyin) is a Chinese expression for persons and things that are not easily met. Western missionaries working in the desolate backwaters of pre-modern China fit this description. In this book scholars from different backgrounds discuss and define various aspects, special characteristics and long-range aims of the Christian apostolate in late Qing and early republican China. The topics merge from church-state relationship, mission administration and social work to the formation, role and feelings of indigenous priests. Among the articles collected in this book are 'Conflict, Confusion and Control. Some Observations on Missionary Cases' by Prof. Dr. Ku Wei-ying (National Taiwan University), 'Body and Soul. Professional Health Care in the Catholic Missions in China between 1920 and 1940' by Dr. Dries Vanysacker (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven) and 'Quelques échos des prêtres chinois dans les missions de Scheut' by Prof. Dr. Françoise Aubin (Centre National de Recherche Scientifique). By the publication of this book we hope to convince the reader that the development of the Catholic Church in China is an exceptionally interesting and important subject. Yet we also acknowledge that its study is still an 'empty valley' which waits to be filled with the 'sound of footsteps' from a new generation of scholars.

"Han-Mongol Encounters and Missionary Endeavors traces the history of the Belgian Scheut mission within the ecological, geopolitical, socioeconomic and ethnocultural context of the Mongol-Han borderlands during the height of European colonialism and the collapse of the Qing dynasty. The main subjects of this study are over 100 Roman Catholic Missionaries form the Low Countries (Holland and Belgium) who worked in the Southwest Mongolia apostolic vacariate. The vicariate constitutes the geographical boundaries of the study. The timeframe extends from the origins of the mission in 1874 until the end of the Qing dynasty in 1912."
"The study describes the origins of the Southwest Mongolia vicariate byeond the Great Wall and along the Yellow River Bend during the transition period from Lazarist missionary activities in the 1840s up to the endeavors of the Scheutists in the early 1870s.The author outlines the historical development of the Ordos Mongols and Chrisitan missions within their respective Qing imperial and European national contexts. The text also analyses not only the European background, the double ecclesiastical and religious organization of the mission,,but also the realtions between domestic and overseas mission fields, and the missionary motives within the late Qing socioeconomic context, and the life of localized Catholic communities. These are described within the ethnocultural context of the Han-Mongol mixed-living area of the Ordos, and as seen mainly through the eyes of the missionaries. The desertification of the Ordos steppes, as well as the aftermath and impact of the popular Boxer movement in Inner Mongolia on the development of the Scheut mission and the local church are also summarized."--publ. note.
