While comprehensively referring to a wide range of canonical texts on filial piety, including politics, ethical thought, social customs, legal codes, poetry and prose, he presents and comments on various details related to traditional Chinese filial piety. He interprets his understanding of Chinese filial piety from his Western academic background and systematically introduces to the West the idea of filial piety that runs through Chinese ritual and law, thereby providing an important reference for Western understanding of Chinese filial thought. |
