Note | First published, Leyden, 1687. "Written anonymously, but the author was Charles (also Gabriel) Dellon, a Frenchman imprisoned for two years for heresy by the Inquisition at Goa, then condemned to the Portuguese galleys. He was, however, freed and wrote this book in 1687. It was placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum in 1690. He dedicated his book to Mlle. de Cambout de Coislin, stating that it would be wrong to complain of his treatment by the Inquisition, since it gave him the opportunity to dedicate his book to her." --Note by Stephen Feldman, Asian Rare Books, Inc. |
