新緑や紅葉の名所として知られる東福寺は、京都を代表する禅寺の一つです。日本から中国へと渡り、南宋時代の高僧無準師範に禅を学んだ円爾(聖一国師)を開山に迎えて創建されました。「東福寺」の名は、奈良の東大寺と興福寺になぞらえて、その一字ずつをとったことに由来します。 東福寺の寺宝をまとめて紹介する初の機会となる本展では、「画聖」とも崇められた絵仏師・明兆による記念碑的大作「五百羅漢図」全幅を修理後初公開するとともに、応仁の乱による戦火を免れた貴重な文化財の数々 や、巨大伽藍にふさわしい特大サイズの仏像や書画類の優品も一堂に展観いたします(※会期中展示替えがあります)。 草創以来の東福寺の歴史を辿りつつ、大陸との交流を通して花開いた禅宗文化の全容を幅広く紹介し、東福寺の日本文化における意義とその魅力を余すところなくご覧いただきます。 (プレスリリースより)
