Le 17 mars 1865, un groupe d'une dizaine de paysans d'un village voisin de Nagasaki se presse devant les portes de l'église, symbole de l'ouverture du Japon à l'Occident. Ces Japonais tiennent absolument à adorer la statue de la Vierge à l'Enfant qui se trouve dans l'édifice, et à rencontrer les " moines français " pour leur avouer un secret : ce sont des chrétiens cachés, des descendants de catholiques de la première évangélisation (XVIe-XVIIe siècles). Malgré la proscription, ils ont continué à respecter la foi et les rites ancestraux chrétiens tout en portant en apparence un culte aux bouddhas et divinités locales. C'est l'histoire de ces communautés que retrace ici Martin Nogueira Ramos.

Une histoire au long cours qui s'ouvre en 1614, date de l'interdiction du catholicisme par les autorités, pour s'achever à la fin du XIXe siècle, avec la promulgation de la première Constitution moderne qui octroie la liberté religieuse aux Japonais. Époque de clandestinité, partielle ou totale, pour ces chrétiens qui doivent pratiquer leur religion en secret ; époque aussi d'échanges entre l'Occident et le Japon dont ces villageois sont souvent parties prenantes. À partir de nombreux documents manuscrits éparpillés entre Kyushu, Tokyo, Paris et Rome, l'auteur fait revivre la vie sociale et religieuse de ces communautés. Il montre que les chrétiens participent, eux aussi, aux transformations qui bousculent alors l'archipel, tout en assumant la continuité des modes d'organisation légués par leurs ancêtres. Leur histoire permet de revisiter par le bas la société japonaise prémoderne.
