This book is a ritual in Latin specially adapted to the needs of the Japanese church in accordance with the Rituale Romanum and edited by Bishop Luis de Cerqueira. Luis de Cerqueira (1552-1614), was a native of Vila de Alvito, Evora, in Portugal. He joined the Jesuit Order in 1566. After his studies he spent some years in Rome, serving as secretary at the Jesuit Curia. Around 1577 he retumed to Portugal, where he was occupied in various assignments. In 1592 he was named bishop of Japan, but he did not arrive there until 1598. He spent sixteen years in the mission and worked tirelessly for the spreading of the Gospel. He went through great hardship in the persecution ofthe Tokugawa reign and died in Nagasaki. Cf.
