Beichen 北辰

Library holds only no. 3 (June 10, 1929). "Specially bound for the private library of the Father General of the Society of Jesus." The issue comes with a "loose sheet with retreat schedule" dated 1977. This issue was given to the library by Anthony E. Clark in 2025. Quotes from the accompanying donation list by Clark.

Beichen 北辰, a monthly, was published by the Institut des hautes études industrielles et commerciales 天津工商學院 in Tianjin. The ads for businesses in Tianjin in our copy would accord with that location. It appears that the name was changed to Xin Beichen 新北辰 in 1935, which bibliographical records say was published by Xin Beichen zazhi she 新北辰雜誌社 in Beiping (Beijing). In 1940, Löwenthal (p. 32) wrote that Xin Beichen was published by the National Catholic Action Centre in Beiping. It had a circulation of 4,000 copies. Löwenthal (chart 1, no. 1) lists Xin Beichen as having been founded in 1929, so he assumes a continuity between the two publications. Peng Fuying (p. 65) writes that the magazine "ceased publication following the outbreak of the anti-Japanese war." Exactly when publication ceased remains to be determined.
