Note | Selected and translated by Edward Conze. "Most of the writings chosen for this anthology were recorded between 400 A.D. and 100, the Golden Age of Buddhist literature. They include passages from the Dharmapada, the Buddhacarita, the Questions of King Milinda, and the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Dr. Conze has concentrated on texts intended for the layman rather than for the monk and his selection exhibits more of the humanity than the profundity of the Scriptures. His translation shows a respect for the characteristic diction of Buddhist teachings and manages to preserve much of the original flavour." |
